The other Galatea - HMS Galatea

Galatea (contract number F18) of the Leander class of frigates was laid down some time between 1959 and 1963 and completed some time between 1963 and 1966. There were 26 ships in all built in three separate groups and with some differences between the members of the different groups.

• Displacement : 2500 tons (standard), 2900 tons (loaded)
• Length : 372 ft
• Beam : 41 ft
• Draught : 18 ft
• Machinery : 2-shaft geared steam turbines 30,000 shp at 30 knots
• Armament : 2 4.5 inch guns (later replaced by : 1 Ikara anti-submarine missile launcher), 2 40mm Bofors guns, 1 Limbo Mk 10 anti-submarine mortar, WASP anti-submarine helicopter
